How Rare Disease Plays a Role in Child Protection Cases

Rare Disease Day.

For families living it, there is nothing “rare” about the exhaustion.

The endless appointments. The years without answers. The specialists. The genetic testing. The fear.

What should never be part of that journey?

Suspicion.

When a child has a rare or medically complex condition, symptoms are often unfamiliar. Complicated. Misunderstood.

But complex does not mean criminal.
Unexplained does not mean abuse.
Rare does not mean parent-caused.

Child abuse pediatricians hold immense power in children’s hospitals. And with that power must come humility — and a willingness to consider all medical possibilities, not just one. A diagnostic mystery should not become a criminal accusation.
Seeking medical care should not cost a parent their child.

On Rare Disease Day, we stand with families fighting for answers —
and fighting to stay together.

Many rare diseases present with symptoms doctors rarely see.
Bruising. Fractures. Feeding issues. Neurological decline.
When medicine doesn’t recognize the condition, families can become the target of suspicion instead of the focus of investigation.
On Rare Disease Day, we remember that lack of knowledge should never become an accusation.
